Gamble Residence – Slope Area

Eco-Friendly Landscape Solutions for Challenging Slopes

Designing this challenging slope required innovative solutions to address:

  1. A steep incline.

  2. Existing unsightly log retaining walls.

  3. Three large, mature trees.

To overcome these challenges, we proposed a 7.5” thin Gabion Wall constructed from Corten Steel and filled with durable aggregate. This retaining wall was designed to sit atop the existing structure, raising the slope's level while concealing the log walls. To define the space and add visual interest, a perforated Corten Steel panel was proposed for the far-left corner, creating an enclosed, more cohesive area. The panel also provides an opportunity to feature custom wording that reflects the client’s vision. Additional elements include geometric-patterned Corten Steel planters designed to seamlessly integrate the mature trees into the landscape. To enhance the aesthetic and ecological appeal, a natural rock bubbler fountain was suggested. This feature not only adds beauty but also serves as a water source for birds and pollinators. For low-maintenance, eco-friendly landscaping, we recommended drought-tolerant plants and cacti that thrive under the canopy of the large trees, conserving water while complementing the overall design.
